The Facebook website is the second most popular website in the world, according to the Alexa Internet ranking site. As a top website, Facebook is constructed from a diverse series of Memcache and PHP layers, among others.

The director of engineering for Facebook, Bobby Johnson, has an immense task in ensuring that the Facebook interface, including its memcache and PHP parts, are running smoothly day by day, hour by hour, and even minute to minute.

Bobby Johnson however simplifies the Facebook architecture by describing it in three simple parts. It includes the web server layer running Linux, the cache layer relyingon Memcache, while the page layer is written in PHP.
